In this exhibition, we bring to life a unique encounter between tradition and innovation. With a focus on the exceptional 20th-century ceramics of the Zaalberg family, we show not only functional tableware but also the free forms and artworks of Gijb Zaalberg, who continues to make active work to this day.

Alongside these pieces, we will present contemporary ceramics by designers connected to Eindhoven - alumni of the Design Academy, makers from the region and residents of the EKWC. With both functional and freely designed ceramics, they show how this versatile craft continues to renew itself.

On display at the exhibition are works by; José Zaalberg - Van den Brande, Natasja Alers, Atelier NL, Jonne Stout, Kiki van Eijk, Kirstie van Noort, Koos Buster, Moca Tableware, Piet Hein Eek, Studio Joachim-Morineau, Vij5 - with work by Lotte de Raadt, Kirstie van Noort and A+N - and Willem Zwiers.

This exhibition offers an inspiring look at the possibilities of ceramics and invites you to discover the craftsmanship and creativity of different generations.

Gijb (Gijsbert) Zaalberg, born 13 October 1937 in Zoeterwoude, is a Dutch ceramicist and sculptor, from a prominent family of potters. He began his career in the family business Potterij Zaalberg and studied at the Royal Academy of Arts in The Hague. He later trained at the Instituto Statale d'Arte per la Ceramica in Faenza, Italy, and worked in studios in Milan and Israel.

From 1961, he worked as an independent potter within the family business, where he developed new glazes and decorations, such as the band decor on the ‘Ringeling’ dinner service and the ‘Rondom’ dinner service. In 1979, he established his own studio in Leerdam to focus on unique ceramic objects and collaborations with other artists. His work is characterised by a combination of functional and free forms, drawing inspiration from geometric compositions and sometimes surrealistic elements.

Gijb Zaalberg's ceramics are included in the collections of several museums, including Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen. To this day, he remains active in creating ceramics, combining tradition with innovation, continuing to develop his own unique style.
