"THE FUTURE OF THE ALBERT VAN ABBEHUIS"

(NL) Als ontwerp project hebben 120 architectuur studenten van de TU/e, faculteit Bouwkunde laten onderzocht hoe we in de toekomst mogelijk kunnen groeien in onze mogelijkheden als expositieruimte en het verbreden van onze activiteiten. De studenten zijn gevraagd om te reageren op de actuele vraag naar Artist in Residence plekken in Eindhoven en deze te realiseren in de tuin van het Albert van Abbehuis. De bijzondere plannen worden met schetsen, posters en maquettes tijdens 3 dagen getoond samen met enkele extra activiteiten.

DE OPDRACHT:

Ontwerp een tijdelijk paviljoen voor een ‘artist-in-residence', die wordt uitgenodigd in een van de vier seizoenen. Tijdens dit verblijf werkt de kunstenaar aan een expositie welke aan het einde van het seizoen in het paviljoen wordt gepresenteerd. Deze seizoenen worden afgewisseld met een of meerdere openbare workshops.

De studio van de kunstenaar is compact en voorziet in alle basisbehoeften. Ondanks de nabijheid van het atelier, biedt het voldoende privacy voor de kunstenaar. Het atelier biedt alles wat de kunstenaar nodig heeft om werk te kunnen maken en kan gebruikt worden voor verschillende vormen van ambacht (schrijven, schilderen, beeldhouwen enz). Het heeft de juiste lichtomstandigheden en heeft een directe relatie met het van Abbehuis, de tuin en de naastgelegen straat. Hierdoor is er contact met publiek mogelijk, maar behoud een balans tussen concentratie en inspiratie.

De flexibele ruimte kan het hele seizoen gebruikt worden voor workshops en zal aan ieder einde van een seizoen worden omgevormd tot een expositie- en/of evenementen ruimte. Deze ruimte is het meest publieke deel van het gebouw. Daarnaast moet er ook een mogelijkheid zijn om vergaderingen te organiseren of koffie/thee te serveren aan bezoekers tijdens een seizoen. Je zou kunnen overwegen om de studio en de flexibele ruimte met elkaar te verbinden indien dit nodig is. Een overdekte en terrasvormige buitenruimte zou verbonden moeten zijn met het paviljoen en ook flexibel gebruikt moeten kunnen worden.

Het paviljoen moet onafhankelijk van het van Abbehuis kunnen functioneren. Wat inhoud dat het paviljoen een eigen ingang nodig heeft, serveervoorzieningen, dienst ruimten zoals een pantry, toilet (rolstoel toegankelijk) en een garderobe. Het ontwerp moet ook een hellingbaan bevatten om het hoogteverschil van 60 cm tussen de tuin en het huis te overbruggen. Mindervalide bezoekers moeten het paviljoen en het van Abbehuis kunnen bereiken.

Denk ook na over de interactie tussen de functies en hoe je ze integreert in één samenhangend paviljoen ontwerp. Bedenk dat het gebouw in alle seizoenen gebruikt zal worden, dus dat het comfortabel moet zijn op koude en warme dagen. Bedenk ook wat dit betekent voor de daglicht kwaliteit en de relatie tussen binnen en buiten het gehele jaar door. Het paviljoen wordt tijdelijk gebouwd om zeven jaar mee te gaan. Na deze periode moet het gebouw gedemonteerd en verwijderd worden zonder sporen achter te laten.

(ENG) As a design project, 120 architecture students from the TU/e, Faculty of Architecture have had a look at how we could possibly grow in our capabilities as an exhibition space and broaden our activities in the future. The students were asked to respond to the current demand for Artist in Residence spots in Eindhoven and realise them in the garden of the Albert van Abbehuis. The special plans will be shown with sketches, posters and models during 3 days along with some extra activities.

THE ASSIGNMENT:

Design a temporary pavilion for an artist-in-residence, who is invited to one of the four seasons. During this stay, the artist will work on an exhibition which will be presented in the pavilion at the end of the season. These seasons alternate with one or more public workshops.

The artist's studio is compact and provides all basic needs. Despite its proximity to the studio, it offers sufficient privacy for the artist. The studio provides everything the artist needs to create work and can be used for different forms of craft (writing, painting, sculpture, etc). It has the right lighting conditions and has a direct relationship with the van Abbe House, the garden and the adjacent street. This allows contact with the public, but maintains a balance between concentration and inspiration.

The flexible space can be used for workshops throughout the season and will be transformed into an exhibition and/or event space at the end of each season. This space is the most public part of the building. There should also be a possibility to host meetings or serve coffee/tea to visitors during a season. You could consider connecting the studio and the flexible space if needed. A covered and terraced outdoor space should be connected to the pavilion and also have flexible use.

The pavilion should be able to function independently of the van Abbe House. Which means the pavilion needs its own entrance, serving facilities, service areas such as a pantry, toilet (wheelchair accessible) and a cloakroom. The design should also include a ramp to bridge the 60 cm height difference between the garden and the house. Disabled visitors should be able to access the pavilion and the van Abbe House.

Also think about the interaction between the functions and how to integrate them into one coherent pavilion design. Consider that the building will be used in all seasons, so it should be comfortable on cold and hot days. Also consider what this means for daylight quality and the relationship between inside and outside all year round. The pavilion will be built temporarily to last for seven years. After this period, the building should be dismantled and removed without leaving any traces.
