“Smoking rituals in the smoke-free city”
Since 2009, Florian has been working on narrative projects in and about public space under the name Site Stories. The first part of the exhibition illustrates methods he employs in his conversation starters through recordings of various projects.
The conversation installation from Smoking City to Smoke-Free City is created especially for the Albert van Abbehuis. In it, Florian brings together elements of history, from smoking rituals to smoking spots and smoke-free future dreams. With a combination of models, illustrations and anecdotes/statements, the conversation is sparked about Eindhoven's emission-free future, with that very smoking city, the era of the cigar, providing inspiration. The installation challenges people to share experiences and think along. Results of these conversations can in turn find a place in the installation and form a starting point for subsequent conversations.
Once, Eindhoven was full of chimneys and the tobacco-related industry was one of its largest employers. The city was also known as Ville Fumée. Some buildings still refer to this history, such as the former villa of cigar manufacturer Albert van Abbe. We are currently in the transition phase from smoking city to a smoke-free and emission-free city. Fewer and fewer people smoke, most Eindhoven chimneys have long since stopped smoking, and smoking cars are discouraged from entering the city. We would like to live in a healthy city, where there is room to exercise and relax in a green environment.
As the popularity of the cigar declined more and more in the 1970s, the president of the Dutch Cigar Industry Association concluded:
"You smoke a cigar in peace and quiet. And that is what people lack these days. Everything has to be rushed. Most smokers start immediately on the cigarette, although for health reasons the cigar should be preferred." So in his thinking, we should go back to the cigar! So can we still learn something from the smoking city before it is gone forever? What culture and rituals did the smoking city have? Of course we cannot go back to the cigar with today's knowledge, but can we still translate something of that culture to the present zeitgeist, if we leave out the smoking itself?
The location, the Albert van Abbehuis, is the former home of one of the most important employers of the Eindhoven cigar industry.
The smoke-free living room is the location par excellence to start this conversation. After the exhibition, the installation can be reassembled and deployed in other places.
"Rookrituelen in de rookvrije stad"
Sinds 2009 werkt Florian onder de naam Site Stories aan verhalende projecten in en over de publieke ruimte. In het eerste deel van de expositie worden methoden die hij toepast in zijn gespreksstarters geïllustreerd door middel van registraties van verschillende projecten.
De gespreksinstallatie van Rookstad naar Rookvrije stad wordt speciaal voor het Albert van Abbehuis gemaakt. Hierin brengt Florian elementen uit de geschiedenis, van rookrituelen tot rookplekken en rookvrije toekomstdromen samen. Met een combinatie van maquettes, illustraties en anekdotes/uitspraken wordt het gesprek aangewakkerd over de emissievrije toekomst van Eindhoven, waarbij juist die rookstad, het tijdperk van de sigaar, inspiratie vormt. De installatie daagt uit om ervaringen te delen en mee te denken. Resultaten van deze gesprekken kunnen weer een plek krijgen in de installatie en een startpunt vormen voor volgende gesprekken.
Ooit stond Eindhoven vol met schoorstenen en was de tabak gerelateerde industrie één van de grootste werkgevers. De stad werd ook wel Ville Fumée genoemd. Enkele gebouwen verwijzen nog naar deze geschiedenis, zoals de voormalige villa van sigarenfabrikant Albert van Abbe. Momenteel bevinden we ons in de transitiefase van rookstad naar een rookvrije en uitstootvrije stad. Steeds minder mensen roken, de meeste Eindhovense schoorstenen zijn al lang gestopt met roken en rokende auto’s worden ontmoedigd de stad in te rijden. We willen graag leven in een gezonde stad, waar ruimte is om te bewegen en ontspannen in een groene omgeving.
Toen de populariteit van de sigaar in de jaren ’70 steeds meer afnam concludeerde de voorzitter van de Nederlandse Vereniging voor de Sigarenindustrie:
“Een sigaar rook je in alle rust. En dat is wat de mens tegenwoordig ontbreekt. Alles moet gehaast. De meeste rokers beginnen direct aan de sigaret, hoewel uit gezondheidsoverwegingen de voorkeur gegeven zou moeten worden aan de sigaar.” In zijn denkwereld zouden we dus terug moeten naar de sigaar! Kunnen we dan toch nog iets leren van de rookstad voordat deze voorgoed is verdwenen? Welke cultuur en welke rituelen kende de rookstad? Terug naar de sigaar gaan we met de kennis van nu natuurlijk niet, maar kunnen we toch iets van die cultuur vertalen naar de huidige tijdsgeest, wanneer we het roken zelf achterwege laten?
De locatie, het Albert van Abbehuis, is het voormalige woonhuis van één van de belangrijkste werkgevers van de Eindhovense sigarenindustrie. De rookvrije woonkamer is de locatie bij uitstek om dit gesprek te starten. Na de expositie kan de installatie op andere plekken opnieuw opgebouwd en ingezet worden.
BIO:
Florian de Visser graduated cum laude in 2008 from Design Academy Eindhoven in Man & Public Space. He graduated with the project Continuo in which he let local stories about Eindhoven's inner city flow along with the global stream of waste paper. It formed the basis of his way of thinking and working with, among other things, narrative maquettes and spatial illustrations. Since 2009 he has been working from Eindhoven under the name Site Stories on various projects that focus on tracing and representing stories in public space. He sees places as one big network of stories connecting people, places and times. He tries to bring out the non-physical beauty of places and let people fantasize about the past and future of their daily living environment.
He also regularly teaches at the Rotterdam Academy of Architecture and is a "minister" at the Ministry of Imagination: a collective of creative thinkers and doers who collectively use their knowledge and imagination to help libraries and other cultural institutions realize their future plans.
Examples of permanent work are the Verhalenwijzers in Utrecht, historical layer in the floor of De Chocoladefabriek in Gouda and a wallpaper with the life history of the Proosdij in Deventer.

BIO:
Florian de Visser studeerde in 2008 cum laude af aan Design Academy Eindhoven in de richting Man & Public Space. Hij stuurderde af met het project Continuo waarbij hij lokale verhalen over de Eindhovense binnenstad liet meevoeren met de wereldwijde stroom van oud papier. Het vormde de basis van zijn manier van denken en werken met onder andere verhalende maquettes en ruimtelijke illustraties. Sinds 2009 werkt hij onder de naam Site Stories vanuit Eindhoven aan diverse projecten waar het opsporen en verbeelden van verhalen in de publieke ruimte centraal staat. Plekken ziet hij als één groot netwerk van verhalen die mensen, plaatsen en tijden met elkaar verbindt. Hij probeert de niet-fysieke schoonheid van plekken naar boven te halen en mensen te laten fantaseren over het verleden en de toekomst van hun dagelijkse leefomgeving.
Daarnaast geeft hij regelmatig les aan de Rotterdamse Academie van Bouwkunst en is hij ‘minister’ bij het Ministerie van Verbeelding: een collectief van creatieve denkers en doeners die gezamenlijk hun kennis en verbeeldingskracht inzetten om bibliotheken en andere culturele instellingen te helpen bij het realiseren van hun toekomstplannen.
Voorbeelden van permanent werk zijn de Verhalenwijzers in Utrecht, historische laag in de vloer van De Chocoladefabriek in Gouda en een behang met de levensloop van de Proosdij in Deventer.
