(NL)“Ik ben een collage van momenten uit het ‘hier en nu’, maar ik ben ook ‘morgen en daar’ en ‘toen en daar’. In zekere zin besta ik dus in meerdere tijdlijnen en ruimtes, of beter gezegd, ze bestaan allemaal tegelijkertijd in mij. Ik ben nieuwsgierig naar deze bruggen die in mij verschijnen – vooral nostalgie. Vertellen ze meer over de onvermijdelijkheid van een toekomst zonder mij, dan over het verleden zelf? En de ruimte, die toont zich als het raakvlak waarop alles samenkomt.”
Urša Prek (1993 Slovenië) is een interdisciplinair kunstenaar. In haar werk, variërend van visuele- tot geluidsinstallaties en sculpturen, houdt zij zich bezig met thema’s als herinnering en historie. Haar werk is niet onderworpen aan een specifiek medium, maar afhankelijk van de conceptuele onderlaag die bepaalt welk medium relevant is voor gebruik.
Nieuwsgierigheid naar wat ons maakt tot wie we zijn drijft haar. Zij onderzoekt dit vooral in relatie tot persoonlijke ervaringen en geleefde geschiedenis, het verstrijken van de tijd, de waarde van het geheugen en hun verbinding met de ruimte waarin deze plaatsvindt. Zij beschouwt ruimte als een fundamentele context van de menselijke ervaring. Ons bestaan, onze identiteit en onze leefruimte worden ondersteund door de persoonlijke betekenis die we eraan verbinden. Vragen als: hoeveel van mijn geheugen is betrouwbaar? Hoe identificeer ik mij met mijn verleden? Welke objecten activeren mijn ervaringen? zijn cruciale ingrediënten voor de conceptuele ontwikkeling van haar werk.
Op de solotentoonstelling zijn een aantal werken uit de periode 2022-2023 samengebracht. Inhoudelijke aanleiding voor de werken zijn ogenschijnlijk weinig spectaculaire artefacten uit Urša’s jeugd in Slovenië, zoals bijvoorbeeld de goedkope vanillepudding in plastic bekertjes die een hoofdrol spelen in Shedding (2022), Event Horizon (2023), Champion: participation award (2023) en Cadet (2023). We vergeten dingen, maar soms kunnen alledaagse dingen een wereld doen herleven en het heden laten beleven met een hernieuwde blik. Dit eenvoudige dessert toont deze merkwaardige kracht van het geheugen.

De wild-observatietorens in de wouden van Slovenië vormen de kern van het werk Bear Witness uit 2023. Voor Urša bevatten deze meerdere betekenislagen. Ze zijn gebouwd ter observatie van wilde dieren en als jagersposten. In haar jeugd waren dit haar favoriete schuilplekken tijdens wandelingen met haar familie. Het zijn tegelijkertijd veilige havens en machtsstructuren: kijken zonder gezien te worden. De relatie tussen macht en kinderlijke onwetendheid zegt iets over het collectieve verleden van haar omgeving, zoals de Joegoslavische identiteit. Hoewel zij niet actief deel uitmaakte van de Joegoslavische conflicten, maakt de verbinding deel uit van haar identiteit via het collectieve geheugen van het land.
Na het blootleggen van de betekenislagen verliezen de objecten uit haar herinnering hun ogenschijnlijke onbeduidendheid en kunnen deze mededelingen doen over cultuur en mentaliteit in een periode uit het verleden en heden.
Vanuit persoonlijke ervaring onderzoekt Urša Prek de betekenis van herinnering, archief en geschiedenis waardoor een persoon (en/of de samenleving) zichzelf definieert. Van persoonlijk tot collectief markeert dit het focuspunt in haar werk.

So, in a way I exist in multiple timelines and spaces, or rather, they all exist simultaneously within me. I am curious about these bridges that appear within me – nostalgia especially. Does it tell more about the inevitability of the future without me, than the past itself? And space, it presents itself as the interface on which everything comes together”.

Urša Prek (1993, Slovenia) is an interdisciplinary artist based in Eindhoven, Netherlands. Her work, ranging from visual to sound installations, explores the territories of memory and history. Her work is not subject to a specific medium, but depends on the conceptual underlay that determines which medium is relevant for use.
She is driven by a personal curiosity about what makes us who we are, especially in terms of personal experiences and lived history, passage of time, the value of memory and their connection to space. She sees space as a fundamental context of human experience. Our existence, our identity and our living space are supported by the personal meaning we attach to it. Questions like how much of my memory is reliable? How do I identify with my past? Which objects activate my experiences? are crucial ingredients for the conceptual development of her work.
The solo exhibition brings together a body of works from 2022 and 2023. The content of the works appear to be unspectacular artefacts from Urša's youth in Slovenia, such as the cheap vanilla pudding in plastic cups that play a leading role. In at least four works Event Horizon, Shedding, Champion: participation award (2023) and Cadet (2023) pudding has become the recurring topic in last years practice. We forget things, but sometimes everyday things can revive a world and allow us to experience the present with a renewed perspective. This simple dessert demonstrates this remarkable power of memory.

The aesthetics of the wildlife observation towers in the forests of Slovenia form the core of the 2023 work Bear Witness. For Urša, these contain multiple layers of presence. They are built to observe wildlife and as posts for hunters within forest around the country. As a child, they were also her favourite hiding places during family hikes. They are simultaneously safe havens and spaces of power: watching without being seen. The relationship between power and childish ignorance tells us something about the collective past of its environment, such as for instance the Yugoslav identity. Although she was not actively part of the Yugoslavian conflicts the connection is still part of her identity through the collective memory of the environment.
After uncovering the layers of meaning, the objects from her memory lose their apparent insignificance and create possibilities to develop statements about culture and mentality in a period from the past and present as well.
From personal experience, Urša Prek investigates the meaning of memory, archive and history through which a person (and/or society) defines itself. From personal to collective, this marks the focal point in her work.
