In het project Make yourself at home staat het Albert van Abbehuis centraal. Met zijn imposante proporties, jaren twintig decoraties en intieme ruimtes draagt het voormalig woonhuis van de naamgever en zijn familie een industriële geschiedenis. Na de schenking van het huis aan de Gemeente Eindhoven zien we de ontwikkeling naar een hedendaags cultuurhuis als een gastvrij 'nest' voor kunstenaars, waar ze hun werk presenteren en reageren op de inspirerende omgeving. Het huis is in de loop der tijd uitgegroeid tot een reservoir voor dromen, een schuilplaats voor creativiteit en een poort naar verbeeldingskracht. Door de aanwezigheid van de kunstenaars beïnvloeden deze de ervaring van het huis, en vice versa. Het huis is thans een plek waar kunstenaars ideeën inbrengen en het huis een voortdurende transitie ondergaat.
Gebruikmakend van een tijdlijn met foto’s, krantenartikelen, filmpjes en installaties vertellen we niet alleen over gebeurtenissen en achtergronden van de familie Van Abbe in chronologische volgorde, maar laten we ook zien dat het huis vanaf de donatie een inspiratiebron is geweest voor veel kunstenaars. Interessant en intrigerend hoe creativiteit wordt geprikkeld en gestimuleerd door de huiselijke sfeer, de rijke historie en de omgeving van het huis. Naast dat er verschillende organisaties en galeries gebruik hebben gemaakt van dit huis, hebben veel kunstenaars zich ook door deze historische plek laten inspireren.
Het huis is als een schuilplaats, een veilige haven. Het bewonen van het huis is echter dynamisch en fungeert als een kader voor ideeën, ontmoetingsplek en een thuis. Kunstenaars verblijven tijdelijk in het huis, en hun aanwezigheid bepaalt hoe het huis wordt ervaren. Zij brengen hun ideeën binnen de ruimte en keer op keer ontstaan nieuwe werelden binnen de vertrouwde muren van het huis.
Zo bouwt Florian de Visser zijn werk rondom verdwijnende rook rituelen en het ophouden van een stuk Eindhovense industriële geschiedenis. De stille film van Lilia Scheerder, opgenomen in het huis, ademt de sfeer uit van de roaring twenties (de periode waarin het huis is gebouwd). TU/e studenten ontwierpen een ‘artist in residence’ voor in de tuin en maakten plannen om over de toekomst van het cultuurhuis te dromen. De installatie van Rogier Walrecht refereert aan het familieleven dat zich afspeelde in de biljartkamer waar tijdens het spel plannen werden gesmeed voor de verdere ontwikkeling van het familiebedrijf. De film van Hildegard Hick handelt over het afscheid nemen van een huis.

The project Make yourself at home focuses on the Albert van Abbe House. With its grand proportions, 1920s decorations and intimate spaces, the former residence of the name-giver and his family bears an industrial history. After the house was donated to the Municipality of Eindhoven, you witness its development into a contemporary cultural home as a welcoming 'nest' for artists, where they present their work and respond to the inspiring environment. Over time, the house has become a reservoir for dreams, a refuge for creativity and a gateway to imagination. Through the presence of the artists, they influence the experience of the house, and vice versa. The house is now a place where artists bring ideas to life and the house is subject to a constant transition.
Using a timeline with photos, newspaper articles, videos and installations, we not only tell about events and backgrounds of the Van Abbe family in chronological order, but also show that the house has been a source of inspiration for many artists since its donation. Interesting and intriguing how creativity is stimulated and encouraged by the homely atmosphere of the house, its rich history and surroundings. Besides several organisations and galleries which have used this house, many artists have also been inspired by this historic place.
The house is like a refuge, a safe haven. However, by inhabiting the house it serves as a framework for ideas, a meeting place and a home. Artists stay in the house temporarily, and their presence determines how the house is experienced.
They bring their ideas into the space and, time after time, new worlds emerge within the familiar walls of the house.
Florian de Visser, for instance, builds his work around disappearing smoking rituals and the ending of a piece of Eindhoven's industrial history. Lilia Scheerder's silent film, shot in the house, breathes the atmosphere of the roaring twenties (the period in which the house was built). TU/e students designed an 'artist in residence' for the garden; proposals to dream about for the future. The installation by Rogier Walrecht refers to the family life that took place in the billiard room where, while playing, plans were drawn up for the further development of the family business. Hildegard Hicks' film deals with saying farewell to a house and what it means to leave things behind.
